Sometimes there are situations when you need to boot your computer from devices other than hardisk, mainly in case when you are trouble shooting some serious operating system issues or virus infections . Generally we use optical drives (CD or DVD) to boot our PC .
Optical drives suffers from wear and tear scratch problem . They may not work when old . USB drives can work better than optical drives . Using some utilities you can make bootable USB pen drive . You can also install any OS including xp , windows 7 or Linux from a bootable usb drives .
USB drives are known by many names like thumb drives , flash drives memory sticks , pen drives etc . So don’t get confused if I use a different name for usb drive . You need to make some changes in your BIOS to boot from usb device. Your BIOS may use a different name for usb drive as mentioned above.

There are many applications to make your usb drive bootable I am going to use a free utility software WinToFlash . You can download wintoflash from here. WinToFlash pull over the contents of a windows installation CD or DVD and prep the USB drive to become a bootable replacement for the optical drive. It can also do this with your LiveCD. After you have downloaded it follow these steps .
1. Install WinToFlash
2. Insert Windows CD/DVD in your drive.
3 Run WinToFlash and click on advance mode.
4. Select task from the options and click on run .
5. Select the Windows source path and the usb drive path and click on run .

6 . Follow the next steps until you are done .
7 . Insert the usb drive and restart your computer.

9 . If the boot-up files are created in the USB drive, select USB-HDD or USB-ZIP (preferred). If the boot-up files are created in the floppy drive of your device, select USB-FDD (for Pen Drive that supports security mode). If you cant see such options then your motherboard does not support usb booting .
10. Save and exit the BIOS setup. You should be able to boot up with you USB device.
